SmartKlean vs. Seventh Generation’s Environmental Savings
The Vermont-based Seventh Generation company is a well-respected and trusted company providing a safer and greener line-up of household cleaning products. Although some of the company’s products require trace amounts of preservatives and use SLS, they typically contain plant-based, biodegradable ingredients.
To reinforce their greener stance, Seventh Generation’s website displays a live counter on the right side of their page announcing how many trees and barrels of petroleum they continue to save with their product line. When you click on ‘learn how’, it will take you to their ‘Environmental Savings’ page.
This page demonstrates the comparisons in environmental savings between their green products and their conventional, petrochemical-laden opponents. Among the 5 products they use for this comparison analysis, they have chosen their 50oz. liquid laundry detergents and their eco-friendly fabric softener sheets.
SmartKlean is up for the challenge!
Since the lifespan of the SmartKlean Laundry Ball is much longer than any conventional or green laundry detergent and it completely replaces fabric softeners, we thought it would be interesting to compare our environmental savings with that of Seventh Generation’s.
Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent vs. Conventional Laundry Detergents:
“If every household in the U.S. replaced just one bottle of 50 oz. 2X petroleum based liquid laundry detergent with our 50 oz. 2X plant-derived product, we could save 233,000 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool 13,400 U.S. homes for a year.”
Now that’s magnificent! However, SmartKlean has far superior savings than this because it lasts 5-6 times longer than their 50 oz. laundry detergent bottle.
Seventh Generation’s 50 oz. liquid laundry detergent = 66 loads
1 SmartKlean Laundry Ball = 365 loads.
1 SmartKlean Laundry Ball = 5 (or more) bottles of Seventh Generation’s 50 oz. liquid detergent.
SmartKlean Laundry Ball vs. Conventional Laundry Detergents:
If every household in the U.S. replaced the use of 5 bottles of 50 oz. 2X petroleum based liquid laundry detergent with (the equivalence of) ONE SmartKlean Laundry Ball, we could save 1,165,000 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool 67,000 U.S. homes for a year.
Seventh Generation Fabric Softener:
“If every household in the U.S. replaced just one box of polyester fabric softener sheets with our paper sheets, and recycled or composted after use, we could prevent 7,400 tons of solid waste from entering our landfills, equivalent to 780 garbage trucks.”
That’s great, but…SmartKlean replaces Laundry Detergent and Fabric softener!
1 Box of 7th Gen. Free and Clear Fabric Softener Sheets = 80 Loads.
1 SmartKlean Laundry Ball = 365 loads of naturally softened laundry. (no fabric softener necessary).
1 SmartKlean Laundry Ball replaces 4 Boxes of 7th Gen. Fabric Softener Sheets.
“If every household in the U.S. replaced a year’s worth consumption of polyester fabric softener sheets with the SmartKlean Laundry Ball, and recycled after use, we could prevent 29,600 tons of solid waste from entering our landfills, equivalent to 3,120 garbage trucks.”
Furthermore, here’s another analysis based on environmental savings ONLY ONE laundry ball can achieve that green or conventional laundry detergents cannot.
Water Saved with SmartKlean:
Without suds or chemicals to rinse off, the SmartKlean Laundry Ball does NOT require a rinse cycle .
Each wash cycle requires about 20 – 40 gallons of water. Roughly half of the water is used for the wash cycle and half for the rinse cycle. If you use top-loaders, you should know that front-loading washers use 40-75% less water and 30-85% less energy.
With top loaders, 1 SmartKlean Laundry Ball can save up to 6,000 – 8,000 gallons of water per year.
With HE / front-loaders, 1 SmartKlean Laundry Ball can save up to anywhere from 2,400 – 6,000 gallons of water within it’s lifespan.
